Never Get Confused by Crypto Math: How to Calculate Spot Profit
Spot trading is the foundation of cryptocurrency investing. Whether you are buying Bitcoin (BTC) on Binance or accumulating Ethereum (ETH) on Coinbase, the goal is simple: Buy Low, Sell High.
But how do you calculate the exact profit after fees? And what is your actual ROI (Return on Investment)? In this guide, we will break down the formula so you can trade with confidence.
The Simple Spot Profit Formula
Unlike Futures trading which involves leverage, Spot trading is straightforward. You own the asset.
Step 1: Calculate Gross Profit
The basic formula to find out how much money you made is:
Formula: (Sell Price - Buy Price) × Quantity
Example:
- You buy 0.5 BTC at $40,000. (Cost: $20,000)
- Price goes up to $45,000.
- Profit = ($45,000 - $40,000) × 0.5 = $2,500 Profit.
Step 2: Calculate ROI %
ROI helps you compare the efficiency of different trades.
Formula: (Profit / Initial Investment) × 100
In our example: ($2,500 / $20,000) × 100 = 12.5% ROI.
Don't Forget Trading Fees!
Most exchanges charge a fee (usually 0.1%) when you buy AND when you sell.
- Maker Fee: When you place a limit order.
- Taker Fee: When you buy instantly at market price.
To get your Net Profit, you must subtract these fees from your Gross Profit.
The Easiest Method: Use Our Tool
Doing these calculations manually every time is time-consuming. We have built a dedicated Spot Profit Calculator that does all this math instantly, including fee deduction.
Spot vs. Futures Trading
It's important to know the difference. In Spot Trading, you can never get liquidated (lose all your money) unless the coin price goes to zero. In Futures Trading, you use leverage, which increases risk.
