What is a background remover?
A background remover separates the main subject of a picture (a person, a product, a pet) from everything behind it and makes the rest transparent. The result is a PNG or WebP with an alpha channel, a fourth channel next to red, green and blue that stores how transparent every pixel is. With it you can place the subject on any colour, any photo or any web page without a box or halo around it.
This tool uses two steps. Instant mode looks at the colours along the edges of your photo, works out the background colour and removes every connected pixel of that colour, so you see a result in about a second with no download. Then an AI model (BiRefNet, an open neural network) runs in your browser and finds the real outline of the subject, which handles hair, clothes and cluttered backgrounds much better than colour alone. The model downloads once and your browser keeps it.
How to remove the background from an image
- Drop your photo into the box, click it to choose a file, or paste an image with Ctrl+V. JPG, PNG and WebP up to 30 MB are supported.
- A first cut-out appears instantly on the checkerboard. On devices with fast graphics the AI then improves it automatically while you wait, without freezing the page.
- If a part of the background is still there, click it on the picture. That colour is added to the list of colours to remove. Click again to add more colours.
- Fine-tune with Tolerance (how different a colour can be and still count as background), Edge softness and Shrink edge.
- Use the Erase and Restore brushes to fix small spots by hand.
- Pick a transparent, solid colour, blurred or custom background, enhance the photo if you like, then press Download HD image.

Full HD and 4K output explained
The cut-out is computed at your photo's own resolution, so nothing is shrunk when you download at Original size. The size menu gives three more choices:

When you export larger than the original, the tool resamples smoothly and then sharpens. That gives a cleaner big picture than a plain stretch, but it cannot add detail the camera never captured. For the best big result, start with the highest-resolution photo you have. To keep very large exports stable on phones, the tool limits the final picture to about 16 megapixels.
Image enhancer: sharpen, brighten and clean up
The enhancer works with five controls that you can use together with the background remover or on their own:
- Sharpness uses an unsharp mask, the same method used in photo editors, to add edge contrast. A little goes a long way: 40 to 80 suits most product photos.
- Brightness lifts or lowers the whole picture. Useful for photos taken in a dim room.
- Contrast pushes darks and lights apart so flat, grey photos look clearer.
- Colour / vibrance makes colours richer or calmer. Keep it modest for products so the colour matches the real item.
- Noise reduction softens grain in flat areas while protecting edges, which helps photos taken in low light.
Auto enhance measures how bright and how contrasty the photo is and picks a gentle starting point. You can always fine-tune afterwards or reset the sliders. These are classic adjustments, not a generative AI upscaler, so they improve what is in the photo without inventing faces, text or textures.
Product photos for eBay, Etsy, Amazon and Shopify
A clean background is the quickest upgrade for a listing photo. Buyers compare many items in a grid, and a clear subject on white or a neutral colour looks more trustworthy than a cluttered desk or floor.
- Amazon: the main image is expected on a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255) and a long side of 1000 px or more lets shoppers zoom.
- eBay: sellers are encouraged to use large, clear photos of at least 1600 px on the long side.
- Etsy: large, bright images do best in search and on the listing page, and a consistent background makes a shop look professional.
- Shopify and your own store: use transparent PNG or WebP cut-outs so one image works on any section colour.

How to get a cleaner cut-out
- The instant step works best on plain backgrounds (studio shots, white or grey walls, logos, passport photos). For people, characters and busy scenes let the AI step finish.
- If the background is a smooth gradient, raise Tolerance a little or click two or three spots of the background.
- If the product leaves a shadow on the floor, raise Tolerance to remove it, or use the Erase brush.
- If part of your subject disappears because it has a similar colour to the background, lower Tolerance and use the Restore brush.
- A white shirt on a white wall is the hardest case. Use a contrasting background when you take the photo.
- Halo around the edge? Use Shrink edge 1 or 2.
- Remove the background first, then enhance. Sharpening a messy edge makes it more visible.
Privacy: your photos stay on your device
The editing code runs in your browser. Your photo is read into memory, processed and downloaded without being sent to Asaan Tools Pro or any other server. Instant mode downloads nothing. The AI step downloads its model from a public CDN the first time, but your photo still stays on your device. That makes the tool suitable for private photos, ID pictures and unreleased product images. Close the tab and the image is gone from memory.

Honest trade-off: cloud services run big models on powerful servers, so they can be faster and slightly cleaner on very hard photos. Here the AI runs on your own device, so it is private and free, but speed depends on your graphics: fast on a modern phone or laptop with WebGPU, slow on old devices. Troubleshooting
- Almost nothing was removed: click on the background in the picture to choose its colour, or raise Tolerance.
- Too much was removed (part of the subject is transparent): lower Tolerance, switch Remove to Only background touching the edges, and paint the missing part back with the Restore brush.
- The background has many colours: click two or three spots on it, use the Erase brush, or try the optional AI mode.
- AI does not start or fails: check your internet connection for the first model download and make sure your ad blocker or network is not blocking cdn.jsdelivr.net or huggingface.co. Use Chrome or Edge, which support WebGPU. The instant result is always kept, and the error message tells you what went wrong.
- AI is slow: devices without WebGPU run the model on the processor, which can take a minute or more. AI mode set to Auto skips it on those devices. Press Use AI now only if you need it, and press Stop AI to cancel.
- The page runs out of memory on a phone: pick Original size instead of 4K, or use a photo under about 12 megapixels.
- The download has a white background, not transparent: you chose JPG. Choose PNG or WebP to keep transparency.
- Edges look haloed after Sharpness: lower the Sharpness slider and use Shrink edge.
What this tool cannot do
- The instant step works from colour and cannot separate a subject from a cluttered background. The AI step can, but only on devices that can run it in reasonable time.
- AI results are very good but not perfect. Check fine hair, glass and thin parts, and fix them with the brushes.
- It does not add real detail when you enlarge a small picture. It only resamples and sharpens.
- It cannot restore a very blurry or heavily compressed photo.
- Glass, smoke and fine see-through objects may keep traces of the old background.
- Very large photos may be reduced to about 16 megapixels on export to keep your browser stable.

Sizes larger than your original are made by smooth resampling and sharpening, which makes the picture bigger but cannot invent real detail that was not in the photo.
Which image formats can I upload and download?
You can upload JPG, PNG and WebP up to 30 MB. You can download PNG (best quality, keeps transparency), WebP (smaller, keeps transparency) or JPG (smallest, no transparency, so the background becomes white or your chosen colour).
How do I get a transparent background?
Choose Remove + Enhance or Remove only, pick Transparent as the new background and download as PNG or WebP. The grey and white squares you see in the preview are only a transparency grid and are not part of the file.
How do I make a white background for eBay, Etsy or Amazon photos?
Pick Solid colour, choose white (#ffffff) and download as JPG or PNG. For an Amazon-style pure white background keep the colour at exactly #ffffff and avoid heavy brightness changes after the cut-out.
What does the image enhancer change?
It adjusts sharpness, brightness, contrast, colour vibrance and noise on the finished picture. Auto enhance sets a mild starting point based on how bright and flat your photo is. It is a classic photo-editing enhancer, not a generative AI upscaler, so it improves what is there and does not add new detail.
Can I use Enhance without removing the background?
Yes. Choose Enhance only and the background stays as it is. This is useful for sharpening product photos, fixing dark pictures or preparing an image for a listing.
Do I have to wait for an AI model to download?
You do not wait to start. The instant cut-out appears in about a second with no download. Then the AI model downloads once (it is large) and your browser keeps it, so later visits skip the download. On devices with WebGPU the AI result follows within seconds. On devices without it, AI only runs if you press Use AI now and can take a minute or more.
Which photos work best with Instant mode?
The instant step suits plain or single-colour backgrounds: studio product shots, white or grey walls, passport-style portraits, logos and screenshots. People, characters, animals and cluttered backgrounds depend on the AI step, so use Chrome or Edge on a recent phone or laptop.
Which browser works best?
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari work. A laptop or desktop is fastest. On phones, close other tabs first so the browser has enough memory for large photos.
Part of my background is still there, or part of my subject disappeared. What can I do?
Click the leftover background on the picture so its colour is removed too. If the subject lost parts, lower Tolerance and paint them back with the Restore brush. Shrink edge removes thin halos, and the Erase brush removes small leftovers.
Can I put a new background image behind my subject?
Yes. Choose My own image under New background and pick any photo. It is cropped to fill the frame behind your cut-out.
Is there a limit on how many images I can process?
There is no limit from our side. Process as many images as your device can handle, one after another. Use Choose another image to start a new one.
Can I use the results for my shop, business or social media?
The tool only edits the picture you give it. Make sure you own the photo or have the right to edit and use it. If the photo shows other people or branded products, follow the rules of the platform where you publish it.
